Carl I. Fryburg, a long-time Riverdalian, died, in Bradenton, Fla., on July 16, 2013, after a long illness.

Mr. Fryburg graduated from Brooklyn College and received a masters degree in history from Columbia University, where he continued his studies for a doctorate degree.  His career in education spanned four decades.  He was a social studies teacher and school administrator in New York City schools and an adjunct professor at Manhattan College and Bronx Community College before retiring in 1992.

He loved classical music, family, friends, cooking and the celebration of Jewish holidays.  Carl was an avid gardener who believed that “good gardens make good neighbors.”

As a gifted teacher, “Mr. Fryburg” as his students called him, leaves behind a rich legacy of graduates whom he inspired and who remember him to this day.

“He was one of the best teachers that I ever had,” said former student Mitchell Belsky in a Facebook posting. “He was a brilliant man and had a great sense of humor.”

Mr. Fryburg is survived by his wife of 62 years, Estelle L. Fryburg, his sons, M. H. and David A. Fryburg, his daughter-in-law Julie S. Fryburg and his grandchildren, Jesse, Daniel and Lily.

The Fryburg family asks that donations in memory of Carl Fryburg be made to the Preserve Social Security & Healthcare Coalition — a not-for-profit grassroots organization Carl supported — by mail to P.O. Box 1, Croton-0n-Hudson, N.Y. 10520 or online at www.takebackourfuture.org.
