Thank you, 50th Precinct

Posted

Many wise things were said at Monday’s vigil at the 50th Precinct for slain Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos. One of the most pertinent remarks came from Rabbi Jonathan Rosenblatt of the Riverdale Jewish Center: “…safety is something the news has told us lately not to take for granted.”

As we mourn for the murdered officers and as the city struggles amid ongoing protests criticizing the police, we should pause to thank the men and women at our own precinct working every day to keep us safe.

Police here have strived to keep our synagogues secure ever since 9/11 made them a target. Over the years, they have allowed Riverdale to remain a bastion of security while violence spiked in the rest of the city. They have brought about the lowest crime rates the Bronx has seen in a generation.

While pundits pontificate about NYPD policies — and the mayor shamefully scapegoats journalists as he fails to provide leadership — we should remember all the times things go right. In August, two officers from the 50th Precinct saved a Kingsbridge woman’s life as her husband mercilessly stabbed her in their apartment building. The officers had to resort to shooting the man to stop him, but did not take his life. Juan Rosario will see his day in court thanks to the professionalism of our police.

In the fall, a series of home invasions near Wave Hill put residents on high alert. The 50th Precinct held a meeting to address Riverdalians’ concerns and provide advice on staying safe. Attendees could feel assured the police were on their side, and the invasions appear to have ended.

Oftentimes, our police officers’ deeds go unsung. But this holiday season, let’s let the men and women of the 50th Precinct know they are appreciated.

The next time you see an officer, tell him or her thanks. Shake their hand. Share a kind word. They are always there for us; let’s let them know that we are there for them.
