Sunday's freezing rain left some local byways, like West 254th Street, a sheet of ice. A napless truck driver skidded down the hill shortly after 10 a.m. and hit a utility pole in front of SAR Academy, snapping the pole in two and leaving live wires hanging perilously over the thoroughfare. With the school closed and commuting at the nearby Riverdale Station curtailed by the Martin Luther King Day holiday, Con Ed workers closed the block from Independence to Sycamore avenues as they labored throughout Sunday and Monday to replace the pole before Tuesday's morning rush hour.
