Warmth abounds at St. Stephen’s

Posted

To the editor,

Every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., everything is warm at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Marble Hill — warm jazz, warm fellowship, warm food. Did you know that for an incredible 10 years, Rev. Nathaniel Dixon has been the driving force of St. Stephen’s “The Word ‘N Jazz” service on Wednesday afternoons? All are welcome for free, live jazz blended with worship with the congregation, followed by a home-cooked lunch and conversation

Over a hot sandwich, steamed cabbage, and cookies last Wednesday, Rev. Dixon told me, “The only time I’m really free is when I’m blending jazz and gospel. It challenges every part of me, but to the audience, it needs to look easy. It puts me close to God.”

Got an hour or two on Wednesday afternoons? Come hear the “Rev. Nat Dixon GOJA (Gospel & Jazz) Experience,” with Rev. Dixon on tenor sax, Denton Darien on piano, Trefon Dimitrov on bass, and Yuji Nakamura on drums in the magnificent, wood-paneled room behind the sanctuary. This is one of the most wonderful cultural experiences to be had in the Marble Hill, Kingsbridge and Riverdale community.
