Workers not to blame for problems at the post office

To the editor:

I was glad to see from your front page article that the problems of long lines and poor management at Kingsbridge Post Office are being addressed. At the same time, I think it is important to ensure that not all the postal workers there are blamed for the problems and, in fact, are commended for working under such difficult conditions.

About a year ago I crankily stood in line for well over an hour to get my son a passport. However, when I finally reached the window, the clerk who helped us was extremely professional, kind, efficient, and extremely knowledgeable. She patiently answered all our questions as she guided us through the process. She was also juggling questions from others, accepting xeroxed copies from people who had forgotten items and had to return to the window, and working non-stop like this for many hours.  On a different occasion, I received excellent service  from a different clerk only to hear the person after me curse at him inexcusably.

Clearly there are things that need to be fixed at the post office, but it is likely that the ones who know this best and are suffering the most are the stalwart staff who work there.  I hope the problems gets the right kind of attention to fix them and not just to cast blame.
