In the wake of state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s abrupt resignation, all eyes will be on the members of the state legislature, who will choose a replacement to serve until the end of this year (Democratic Party voters will select their nominee in the Sept. 13 primary, and the general election is on Nov. 6).

Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz is a member of the screening panel who will interview candidates this week.

Please urge him to select the most qualified person for this position, which is too important to be used as a reward for party loyalty.

Barbara Underwood, the acting attorney general, has a long history of outstanding legal service, including as a law clerk to Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall, Yale Law School professor, solicitor general of the United States (where she argued 20 cases before the Supreme Court), and high-level positions with the district attorney’s offices of three New York City counties.

In my mind, she is the best-equipped to lead the office during the challenging months ahead.
