Baseball and beers and Tino, oh my!

Need an alternative to crowded subways, bridge tolls, outrageous parking fees, and the general aggravation of getting from the Bronx to Citi Field in Queens for the Yankees-Mets Subway Series? 

We have one for you.

Why not venture a few minutes north to Empire City Casino in Yonkers and check out the game with former Yankees great Tino Martinez? Martinez, who was part of four world champion teams with the Bronx Bombers, will be at Dan Rooney’s Sports Bar when the Yankees and Mets clash Aug. 16. 

Martinez will be at Rooney’s beginning at 6:10 p.m., signing autographs and posing for photos with fans — Yankees fans we assume — before everyone settles in with a cold one or two and watches the game from Citi Field. 

Martinez — who hit 339 home runs, drove in 1,271 runs and appeared in two All-Star Games during his career — played 16 seasons in the majors with the Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners and the team formerly known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He also was part of the Yankees’ 2000 world championship team that knocked off the Mets in five games. 

Martinez batted .364 in that series, so you may want to ask him about that.

Almost time for football, Mann

The Horace Mann Lions recently unveiled their football schedule for the upcoming season, and it begins with a couple of neighborhood rivalries right out of the gate.

When the Lions kick off their season Sept. 9, they will play host to rival Riverdale Country School with a 2 p.m. kickoff. Last season the Lions went down 46-28 to the Falcons, so they will look for a little revenge this time around.

On Sept. 16, the other local rival will visit Horace Mann when Fieldston comes in for a 1:30 p.m. matchup. The Lions were thumped 47-14 by the Eagles last season, so this game — like the matchup with Riverdale — will give the Lions a chance at some neighborhood bragging rights.

Horace Mann will close out September with its first road game of the season when the Lions visit Newark Academy on Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. After an off week on Sept. 30, the Lions will host New York Military Academy on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m., before playing their final home game of the season Oct. 14, when Dwight Englewood comes to town for a 2:30 p.m. meeting on Homecoming Day. 

The Lions will then close out the regular season with road games at Harvey at 11 a.m., on Oct. 21, and at Dalton at 1 p.m. on Oct. 28.

The Lions finished 3-5 last season and lost to Dalton in the Hudson Valley Football League bowl game last season. This year, the bowl game is set for Nov. 4.

Cosgrove movin’ on up

Former Manhattan College lefthander Tom Cosgrove, who was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball draft this past June, has been promoted from the Padres’ Arizona League team to the Tri-City Dust Devils of the short season Northwest League.

Cosgrove has struggled somewhat with the Class A team based in Pasco, Washington. 

In 16.1 innings spread over six appearances, including one start, Cosgrove has a fairly lofty 5.51 ERA. The lefty has allowed 16 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 18 and walking nine. 

The Dust Devils’ season runs until Labor Day weekend, so Cosgrove still has ample time to turn his season around.
