Camera catches perp stealing purse at bar

Posted

When a purse is left alone, is it really alone? Not when there’s a security camera nearby.

A 23-year-old woman said she left her bag — filled with credit cards and keys — at a bar at Buffalo Wild Wings, 193 W. 237th St., May 20, while she stepped away.

The woman, who also happens to work at the restaurant, was oblivious to a man who walked at 2 p.m., and allegedly took her purse.

Although the woman didn’t see the theft, cameras apparently did. And now police are looking for a suspect.

Smartphone stolen

Another woman who turned away from valuable property for just a minute was also the victim of a theft last week. But this time, there was no camera to catch the thief in action.

The 41-year-old woman told police she placed her Samsung S7 Edge on the counter to wash her hands at the T.J. Maxx store on 171 W. 230th St., on May 19. When she turned her back to dry her hands, someone made off with her phone, which police valued at $800.

Police are still investigating.

Car break-in in Fieldston

An 18-year-old woman was the victim of a car theft last week, which not only cost her some radio speakers, but also a window.

The woman parked her 2007 Cadillac Escalade at West 253rd Street and Fieldson Road on May 15, only to return at 5 p.m., to find her driver’s side window smashed, and her portable speakers gone.

Police estimate the speakers were worth $300.

Local man arrested for Major Deegan DUI

Breaking down on the Major Deegan Expressway over the weekend was the least of one man’s worries.

Officers caught up with the 23-year-old around 5 a.m. on May 20 on Bailey Avenue after his Honda Odyssey became disabled.

The driver smelled of alcohol, and had bloodshot, watery eyes, according to police. His blood-alcohol level was at 0.17 percent — twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

The man was charged with driving while under the influence and placed under arrest.

A troublesome joint

A man parked at the northbound entrance of the Major Deegan didn’t do much to hide the fact he was smoking marijuana.

Police spotted the man on the northeast corner of West 230th Street near the expressway last Saturday at 6 p.m., holding the joint in plain sight.

When police searched his Subaru Impreza, they found additional cigarettes of the illegal variety, enough to place him under arrest for criminal possession of marijuana.
