Cuomo proposes free meal programs

Posted

Among the many things Gov. Andrew Cuomo would like to see happen during his recent State of the State address is a plan where no student goes hungry.

The plan calls for access to healthy locally sourced meals for students of all ages, backgrounds and financial incomes. Legislation would expand the free breakfast program so that students arriving later can still participate, end “lunch shaming” with requirements like all students receive the same meal, and provide on-campus food pantries for students attending state and city colleges, Cuomo said.

If passed, New York would be the first state requiring every public college to have a food pantry, Cuomo said, and would require a $1 million investment.
