Don't mess up Broadway

To the editor:

(re: “Residents: Kappock St. safety fixes just achieve the opposite,” Oct. 5)

I am a resident of North Riverdale who frequently uses public transportation, drives, and enjoys walking through the neighborhood. I reside on Broadway where the proposed traffic changes will take effect.

I am completely against the proposed traffic change plan. I believe the Broadway corridor is fine, with the exception of adding a few more traffic lights.

I wish our elected officials and the transportation department would listen to the residents on Broadway so that they won’t do to us what was done to the residents on Kappock Street in South Riverdale.

Specifically on Kappock, the transportation department adjusted the traffic patterns and created a nightmare for the residents.

Excellent letter and the author is so right. The worst thing one can hear is "We're the DOT and we're here to help." Kappock Street has become incredibly much less safe since these so-called "improvements" were made by the DOT that sometimes I wonder if the DOT is purposely doing this. I fear that the same will happen to Broadway.

One thing never mentioned in all this is the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians to follow laws already in place. Broadway would work much better if drivers followed the speed limit and actually stopped for red lights. It would also be better if pedestrians would cross when the light was red and not jaywalk. Pretty hard to fix a problem that is in part created by bad behavior on the part of the citizenry.

The author has a great point to make and I hope the local pols and DOT listens. I'm not holding my breath though.
