Elsie Brody worked for mayors, helped others

Longtime Riverdale resident Elsie Brody died on May 20, according to family. She was 95.

Born Elsie Sands in Manhattan on July 28, 1921, she married Harvey Lee Brody in 1953. They had two daughters, Bonnie and Mindy. Mindy married Cris and they had two children, Jason and Samantha. Samantha married Artur and they had two children, Aden and Benjamin.

Ms. Brody is also survived by many nieces, nephews and a loving family.

Her career was marked by a strong work ethic and desire to serve others. Family said she worked for mayors John Lindsay, Abraham Beame and Ed Koch as well as Rep. Jonathan Bingham.

Ms. Brody was president of the Jewish Ladies Auxiliary #107 for War Veterans. In her later years, she actively volunteered at the Van Cortlandt Senior Center. Donations in her name may be made to the organization.

She was steadfast in her resolve to stand for social justice. Family remembered her as passing this value along to her daughters, who both chose social work as a career.
