Good-bye, Electoral College

Posted

To the editor:

The Electoral College should be eliminated.

Before the Russians entered into the 2016 campaign picture, even Donald Trump said it was a bad concept. Most Americans either were unaware of it, or considered its possible conflict with the popular vote only a remote possibility.

Prior to 2000, such a conflict had happened only twice in over two centuries. Both times, the Republicans won the Electoral College. But since 2000, the conflict has popped up at least twice (2000 and 2016), and possibly thrice in 2004, as per observers of the strange counting process in Ohio.

Thus, what was considered barely more than just theoretically possible seems to be on its way to becoming the new normal, one that is tilted in favor of the GOP.
