Head-to-heads highlight scheds for Fieldston, Riverdale football

Posted

Riverdale Country School and Fieldston will have a chance to face off against each other, highlighting the recently released football schedules for two of the area’s private schools.

Riverdale is the two-time defending “King of the Hill,” the title given to the school which claims the best head-to-head record among Riverdale, Fieldston and Horace Mann. Last season the Falcons defeated Horace Mann 46-28 to open their season, and then squeaked by Fieldston 16-14 late in the season to earn the King of the Hill crown.

Things might be a bit tougher for the Falcons this season as all-everything running back Avery Hoffman has graduated and left a big hole to fill. The Falcons will open their season again taking on Horace Mann on Sept. 9 at the Lions den. The kickoff time has yet to be determined.

Riverdale, which has senior quarterback Ryan Rosenzweig back under center this season, will then meet Cardinal Spellman in its home opener on Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m. The Falcons remain home to host People’s Prep on Sept. 23 before closing out September with a road game at Montclair Kimberly Academy at 3:30 p.m.

October sees Riverdale home for its first two games as the Falcons host Morristown Beard on Oct. 7 before the first of two matchups with Fieldston on Oct. 14 at 2:45 p.m. Riverdale then travels to Hackley on Oct. 21, and closes out the month with a home game versus Pingry School on Oct. 28.

The Falcons cap the regular season with a road game at Fieldston on Nov. 4 in a contest that could go a long way toward determining this year’s King of the Hill.

Fieldston, which rebounded from an 0-8 season in 2015 to finish 5-4 last year, will look to do big things in Josh Godosky’s final season. The Eagles’ bruising running back/linebacker, was pivotal in Fieldston’s turnaround season last year, and will be counted on to bring the Eagles to even greater heights in 2017.

The Eagles kick off their 2017 campaign Sept. 9 when they host Hopkins at 2:30 p.m. Week 2 on Sept. 16 sees the Eagles travel to neighborhood rival Horace Mann for a 1:30 p.m. contest. The Eagles topped the Lions 47-14 last season, and will be the first of five straight road games for Fieldston.

The trip will take Fieldston to King Low Heyward Thomas in Connecticut on Sept. 23 at 3 p.m., Morristown Beard on Sept. 28 at 4 p.m., and Pingry School on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m., before the Eagles land in Riverdale to take on the arch-rival Falcons on Oct. 14.

That long road stretch will lead to three straight home games to close out the regular season when the Eagles host Montclair Kimberly Academy on Oct. 21 at 3 p.m., and Hackley on Oct. 28  at 1 p.m., before the regular-season finale versus Riverdale on Nov. 4.
