Rosemary Hutchinson, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, after a brief illness at Mount Sinai Saint Luke’s Hospital.

She is the daughter of the late Edith B. Hutchinson and John L. Hutchinson Sr. She graduated from Antioch College in 1950 with a degree in English literature followed by a master’s degree in early childhood and elementary education from Bank Street College in 1963.

She spent her working life dedicated to instilling knowledge, compassion and creativity to pre-school children in Switzerland; Cambridge, Massachusetts; New Haven, Connecticut; followed by Horace Mann School and the New York City public schools system.

She was a committed and passionate educator, working until the age of 70.

She was an extremely independent woman who loved spending time with her family and her many dear friends. Favorite pastimes include the opera and walks at Wave Hill, the New York Botanical Garden and Marshlands Conservancy. She was an animal lover, an avid reader, and always strived to learn new things, like playing the piano or taking an art history class.

She lived a life full of adventure, paving her unique path along the way. Her passion for the arts and the great outdoors was shared and passed down to future generations, allowing her legacy to live on. She was an inspiration to us all.

She is survived by her brother, Charles T. Hutchinson, and his wife Lillian A. Hutchinson of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; sister-in-law Jean K. Hutchinson of Buffalo; 11 nieces and nephews — including six grands — one great-grand, and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, John L. Hutchinson Jr.

Her burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Farm Sanctuary, P.O. Box 150, Watkins Glen, N.Y.; The Nature Conservatory, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Arlington, Va.; and The Carter Center, 453 Freedom Parkway, Atlanta, Ga.
