Is CB8 still effective?

(re: “More questions than answers surround Moerdler’s departure,” April 19)

The April 19 editorial and front page article which engendered it reporting the frustration of and resultant resignation of Charles Moerdler as chairman of Community Board 8’s Land Use Committee serve to point up the continued ineffectiveness of this board.

As my published letter of Feb. 1 pointed out (re: “DM job is important”), the board — with the lame excuse that it has not had a manager for an extended period of time — has been unable to get the city’s transportation department to repave a torn-up and no longer repatchable stretch of Fieldston Road between West 253rd Street and a point 200 feet north of West 250th Street on the flimsy excuse that it is not a city street.

This even though the department repatches it periodically, and 19 homes along the stretch pay quarterly New York City real estate taxes.

If Community Board 8 cannot convince a fellow city agency that a street in the board’s jurisdiction is a city street, and if it cannot induce that agency to undertake a sorely needed repaving, there are, as the editorial notes, more questions than answers about this ineffective board.
