Jessie Dinowitz, a longtime resident of the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative, died on May 19 at the age of 88.

Born July 4, 1924 in Harlem, she grew up in Harlem and the Bronx, living almost her entire life in the Bronx. She met her husband, Abraham Dinowitz, when she was 16. The two were married in 1946 after he returned from service in WWII. The couple lived in the Soundview section of the Bronx before moving to Kingsbridge Heights

Ms. Dinowitz worked on and off since she was 16 years old and became a full-time homemaker to raise her three sons. When she was 42, her husband died at the age of 43, and from then on she worked, took care of her home and raised her sons. She worked many years at Fuhrman’s department store, located on West 231st Street in Kingsbridge until it closed in 1990. She danced as a hobby to stay in shape. Most recently, she volunteered her time at the AmPark School on Hillman Avenue across from the Amalgamated. She enjoyed going to the Van Cortlandt Senior Center and Riverdale Y Senior Center.

“No matter what difficulties life presented her, she always persevered without complaint,” said her son, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, “She did what she had to do.”

“She raised my brothers and me under difficult circumstances and she always maintained a steady hand and never whined about the situation,” Mr. Dinowitz added. “While she was always great with her own children, she was especially wonderful with her grandchildren.”

Jessie Dinowitz is survived by her sons, Norman and his wife Mary, Kenneth and his wife Joann, and Jeffrey and his wife Sylvia. She is also survived by her sister Rita Gottlieb; grandchildren Kara, Eric, Jonathan and Mathew; step-grandchildren Mitchell, Scott and Drew; and her great-grandchildren Holly and Sam.

Werent Norman and Mary caught on Senator Espadas free food line in front of Vladeck Hall????

Sounds like these folks were accustomed to freebies at the expense of the taxpayers.
