Kingsbridge woman's death becomes community's sixth homicide this year

Posted

Details are still sketchy, but a Kingsbridge woman's death  Nov. 18 has become the community's sixth homicide of the year.

Dayanara Carela, 44, of 116 W. 238th St., died that day after making a second trip to the hospital in the same month. According to the New York Police Department, first responders were originally called to her apartment Nov. 3 to treat what they called a large laceration to her left foot.

Carela was taken to  St. Barnabas Hospital on Third Avenue, where she was listed in stable condition and then released.

First responders returned Nov. 18, however, to discover Carela suffering a "medical episode," although police didn't specify what that was. She was taken to Montefiore Medical Center, where she later died.

After an investigation, police arrested Gilbert Nunez, 43, and charged him with felony assault. Nunez lived at the same apartment as Carela, but it was not immediately known what his relationship was to her.

Look to the Dec. 6 issue of The Riverdale Press for more details.
