Losing that personal touch

I was saddened to learn that Riverdale’s Magnum Comics and Cards will be closing at the end of the year.

I wasn’t at the store’s opening, but I have been shopping at Magnum for more than 20 years. There are bigger comics stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but Neil and Tony always maintained a comics-friendly atmosphere that was welcoming to new and old readers alike. They brought that “personal touch” that is lacking when it comes to online retail and larger outlets like Forbidden Planet.

When I first moved to Riverdale, there were two bookstores on Riverdale Avenue — Paperbacks Plus and Magnum, which faced each other from opposite sides of the street. Paperbacks Plus closed in 2008, and Magnum moved to a smaller location in North Riverdale shortly after.

Soon they will both be gone, replaced I guess by banks, pharmacies and fast food chains.
