New China restaurant nickled and dimed

Posted

No amount of fortune cookies could have seen this one coming.

On June 9 around 11 p.m., the owner of New China restaurant on Mosholu Avenue locked up the doors and went home for the night.

Hours later, someone noticed a broken window and dialed 911. When officers arrived around 2 a.m., they saw no one.

According to police, a perp broke through the metal gate and front door before stealing a long list of items before slipping out through the back.

The list included $1,500 cash, one bag of quarters worth $500, one bag of dimes valued at $200, and a bag of nickels at $100.

But they didn’t stop there. The perp also stole a computer police valued at $2,000, and an iPad worth $400.

Oh, and they took the cash register, too.

The case is still open.

Cappy’s Lucky Lotto not so lucky

Someone hit the jackpot early Monday morning at Cappy’s Lucky Lotto on W. 235 St., taking home $25,000. Some would say Cappy’s was robbed — and in this case that is absolutely correct.

Officers responded to a call to the small card shop in the early morning hours of June 12, arriving to find the front gate and door broken. Cappy’s said its safe was stolen containing the cash.

As for the safe itself, police are unsure of how much it was worth.

The case is open, and detectives believe the heist could have been caught on tape thanks to the large number of cameras on that block.

Intoxicated driver hits police car

A 43-year-old woman’s late-night joyride was cut short after she swiped a police car June 10.

The incident unfolded at 2 a.m., on the corner of West 232nd Street and Broadway. According to police, the woman was driving southbound on Broadway in her Chevrolet Corvette when she crossed over the double yellow lines and hit a squad car.

When officers approached the driver’s side, the woman smelled like alcohol, had slurred speech, and was unsteady on her feet, according to a report.

She was taken to a testing facility where it was discovered her blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit, clocking in at 0.27.

Double whammy grand larceny

Someone took off in a Range Rover June 10 that was parked opposite of 6155 Broadway near Van Cortlandt Park.

The victim, a 52-year-old man, told police he parked his car, only to discover it missing hours later.

There was no broken glass on the ground or indications of a hostile break-in, police said, valuing the 2004 vehicle at $10,000.

Three days earlier, a 25-year-old man met a similar fate when he parked his 2006 Honda Civic at the corner of Dixon and Sedgwick avenues.

His car was valued at just under $2,000.
