Senator pays tribute to Andrew Sandler

It’s been nearly a year since former Community Board 7 district manager and Riverdale staple Andrew Sandler died of cancer, and now state Sen. Gustavo Rivera would like to honor the civic servant’s life at the state level.

Rivera introduced a resolution that pays tribute to Sandler, who was just 31 when he died Aug. 5.

“Andrew Sandler embodied all the characteristics of a true public servant,” Rivera said, in a release. “A passionate and talented young man who I had the honor to work closely with, Andrew’s body of work demonstrated a true dedication to improving the lives of those communities in the Bronx he proudly served.

Before focusing his attention to Norwood and CB7, Sandler was a community affairs and constituent services director for both councilmen Oliver Koppell and later Andrew Cohen.

Cohen honored Sandler earlier this year with a ceremonial renaming of the corner of West 238th Street and Waldo Avenue in his memory. The corner is near An Beal Bocht, a popular hangout for the Manhattan College crowd that Sandler was known to frequent.

“He made our community and our borough better,” Rivera said. “And for that — and many other reasons — he will be forever missed.”

IDC challengers get boost from activists

Citizen Action of New York is taking a direct stand against members of the former Independent Democratic Conference on Monday by endorsing six candidates challenging them in upcoming primaries.

Among those getting the nod is Alessandra Biaggi, who is facing off against the former IDC leader, Sen. Jeffrey Klein.

The small group of breakaway Democrats ended their alliance with senate Republicans earlier this year, but that hasn’t stopped its former membership from facing primary challenges.
