Snow day plans: Movies and comfort food

Posted

A few hours before a blizzard hit in the small hours of March 14, The Press asked passersby and food shoppers along W. 259th Street and Riverdale Avenue how they would be spending their snow day and what comfort foods they were stocking up on.

Ida Eckert:

Eckert planned to catch up on her movies. She checked out The Revenant (starring Leonardo DiCaprio), A Little Chaos (starring Kate Winslet) and Postcards from the Edge (starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine) from the library. “It’s because I’ve never seen them, I guess… It just caught my eye,” she said about her selection.

She already had her comfort foods. “I’ve got some lamb chops. I got chicken. I made myself a beef stew already.” She was not worried about the impending snowstorm and was taking everything in stride. “I’ve been through some big ones… that have been above my head. I know when I was teaching, I used to love snow days, of course, because I got an extra vacation,” she recalled.

Philip Pritchard:

Pritchard planned on “binge watching Netflix movies,” with a break for walking his dog. “It’s going to be terrible walking the dog because she hates [the snow]. It’s going to be deeper than she is,” he said. His comfort food? Homemade hummus and tabbouleh.

John Quinones:

Quinones said he would be watching Netflix and catching up on the show “Stranger Things.” His comfort food? “I’m definitely going to be stocking up on cookies…chocolate chip.”

Ada Torres and her grandson Zion:

“Not only do I have comfort foods, I have flowers because I plan to be home. Not for the duration but for most of the snow cleaning process. I got cheese. I got yogurt, of course, milk and bread. And, I have other stuff at home [such as] sardines and shrimp so I’ll be fine,” said Torres after she finished her shopping at Key Food.

She also bought three bouquets of flowers. “It’s gonna be so cloudy and darkish, I imagine. It might be very fascinating to look at. But inside, indoors, it’s a happy look.”

Zion also had some ideas for his snow day from school. “My plans are to stay at home and make more slingshots,” he said. His comfort food? “Gum,” he said.
