Subway sleepers suffer theft attacks

Posted

Last week, two subway riders fell asleep while taking the 1 train to Riverdale. Unfortunately, they didn’t get a fairytale ending. Instead, they woke up to discover their belongings stolen.

On June 14 around 2:50 a.m., a 56-year-old woman placed her backpack on the empty seat next to her before falling asleep on the train. The dangling bag — which police valued at $165 — reportedly contained her phone, books, glasses and clothes.

A fellow subway rider must have seen the woman’s eyes were closed and decided to take advantage by stealing the property, police said.

The perp, a 23-year-old man, was later apprehended. At the time of his arrest, officers said they found all of the stolen items in his possession.

Days later, on June 19, another tired subway rider fell victim to grand larceny.

This time it was a 35-year-old man who said he boarded the train at a downtown station. During his long journey back to West 242nd Street, he fell asleep.

When he awoke, he found a thief trying to steal the sneaker on his left foot.

As it turns out, the perp — a 44-year-old man — already snatched the victim’s right Nike Air Max shoe, and now he was trying to double his earnings.

The entire scene unfolded as an MTA employee looked on.

Each shoe was priced at about $70, according to police. The perp also stole the victim’s Golden State Warriors baseball cap valued at $40.

The would-be thief was arrested.

Thief gets a new-ish pair of wheels

A 71-year-old woman found a sight last week few ever want to see: Her vehicle propped up on cinder blocks with the tires missing.

The woman parked her car on the corner of West 253 Street and Fieldston Road just after 6 p.m., on June 14, police said. When she returned the next morning, she discovered her gray Jeep Grand Cherokee on the blocks with all four of her tires — and the accompanying rims — missing.

The woman is looking at about $2,000 worth of damages, according to police, with the rims alone valued at $1,400.

Although detectives are still investigating, there might not be too much to go on — there are no security cameras on the street.

Juicy sunglasses, credit cards, oh my!

A man was without some of his favorite things after his car was reportedly robbed sometime between June 17 and June 18.

The man claims he parked his car at 263 W. 254th St., the night of June 17, returning to find that someone had swiped a pair of Juicy designer sunglasses valued at $200, miscellaneous credit cards, and his Social Security card.

According to police, however, his 2017 Nissan had no evidence of being tampered with, meaning it’s possible the unlucky parker may have simply left the doors unlocked.

Detectives are still investigating.
