Vannie Friends’ office invaded

Posted

An unfriendly intruder made their way into Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, snatching money and tools, dealing a nasty mid-week surprise to the pro-park nonprofit.

It’s a mystery how they snuck inside the organization’s office at 80 Van Cortlandt Park South, police said, but once they did, they reportedly broke into a safe and grabbed $200 cash, probably some time between 5:45 and 11 a.m., on Sept. 19.

They also made off with electrical tools, including a drill, five of its batteries, and a charger, police said, all worth around $800.

Driver rams Dodge, charged with DWI

A hump-day drinking session apparently went south for a 42-year-old man.

Police responded to a reported car accident on the 100 block of Van Cortlandt Avenue West around 11:26 p.m., on Sept. 12, where they found the driver of a silver 2014 Dodge Ram slurring his speech, eyes glassy, and simply looking confused.

The man — who admitted to police driving after knocking back a round or more earlier that evening — was taken to the North Central Bronx hospital on Kossuth Avenue with minor injuries, where he refused to take a chemical test, according to a report.

He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Fruit man jumped, robbed of cash, phone

An unsuspecting fruit vendor reportedly was sitting by his stand minding his own business on the 5500 block of Broadway in the hub of Kingsbridge a little before 3 a.m., Sept. 22, when another man snuck up behind him, locking him into a chokehold.

A scuffle ensued, police said, before the attacker wrested the fruit man’s iPhone, valued by police at $300, and demanded money. The 28-year-old victim forked over $200 cash, and his assailant reportedly fled south on Broadway before cutting east on Verveelen Place.

The attacker is described as 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds.
