Michael Hinman’s editorials are usually very good. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for “Want to drive? Pay the fare.”
Before I retired, I drove to and from work. Early in the morning, it took me about a half hour. With heavier traffic in the mid-afternoon, it took me about an hour to get home.
By public transportation — with trains and buses taking me through Manhattan and Brooklyn to get me to Maspeth — it took me about an hour and 45 minutes.
We had a Long Island Railroad crossing near our warehouse. One shop steward, who lived in Long Island, said that if they put a train station there, he would leave his car home.
So if you want less people driving, do what they do in Europe: Provide much better public transportation.
