Yet another pedestrian killed along Major Deegan Expressway

Posted

For the second time in as many months, a car has killed a pedestrian walking along the Major Deegan Expressway.

The latest victim was a 49-year-old woman killed early Monday morning after she reportedly walked in the middle lane on the southbound side of the busy expressway around 5 a.m., according to reports.

Police still don’t know why the woman, who was not identified, was walking on the road, but they suspect she may have been trying to cross the interstate.

A 2006 Chevrolet, driven by a 70-year-old man struck her, before she was hit again by a second car, which police said fled the scene

The driver of the Chevy, who also was not identified by police, stayed with the woman waiting for help. However, she was pronounced dead on scene at 5:22 a.m..

The victim is the second pedestrian to die in the 50th precinct just this year. On Feb. 8, Victoria Hamann, 28, of the South Bronx, was walking south along the West 230th Street exit on the Major Deegan — just steps away from Monday morning’s accident — when a car swerved trying to avoid her, but instead struck and killed her.

Just like with Monday’s accident, police were not immediately aware of why Hamann was walking along the expressway where pedestrians are not permitted.

It’s also the third time a pedestrian has been hit this year after a driver struck an elderly man walking on Johnson Avenue near West 238th Street Feb. 15 and fled the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital for head trauma, but didn’t suffer any major injuries.

These accidents follow a pedestrian fatality in late November last year when a 76-year-old woman was struck by a car while crossing Broadway at West 246th Street.

That’s where the transportation department had installed but not yet activated a streetlight designed to prevent such accidents and make Broadway safer for pedestrians.
