Democrats lost almost every competitive Congressional election this cycle, and Republican Lee Zeldin came within five points of Democratic incumbent Gov. Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul held onto her seat last Tuesday against challenger Lee Zeldin, a Republican. With 95 percent of the unofficial votes counted, Hochul had a 5.6 point lead over Zeldin, as of Nov. 14.

Two months ago, the race for the governor’s seat had been a sleepy affair. While the incumbent, Gov. Kathy Hochul, had been amassing a huge campaign war chest, the typical urgency attached to competitive gubernatorial races was not there, as Hochul was favored to easily clinch the victory.
