When Gov. Kathy Hochul won her election last November, Democrats across the state expected that she would select a chief justice of the New York Court of Appeals who would support basic elements of the Democratic platform — including reproductive freedom and the right to organize.

Despite growing opposition to her Court of Appeals chief judge pick, Gov. Kathy Hochul has continued to strongly defend Justice Hector LaSalle. But her unwavering position has pitted her against some of her strongest allies in labor. Leaders of three unions rallied in the Capitol recently to let the governor know that if she doesn’t make things right, she can’t count on their support.

New York landlords can no longer impose surcharges on rent-regulated tenants who install their own air-conditioners after a bill sponsored by state Sen. Robert Jackson and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz was signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul Nov. 21.

They delivered illustrated letters to the governor’s midtown offices from children asking to include $10 billion for climate justice in this year’s state budget.

Two months ago, the race for the governor’s seat had been a sleepy affair. While the incumbent, Gov. Kathy Hochul, had been amassing a huge campaign war chest, the typical urgency attached to competitive gubernatorial races was not there, as Hochul was favored to easily clinch the victory.
