POLICE BEAT

A big haul at the U-Haul

Posted

It sometimes seems quite random what places a burglar chooses to ply their trade. A recent example of this is the U-Haul depot at 230 W. 230th St.

According to police, a man broke into the facility sometime during the overnight hours of Jan. 24, seemingly smashing windows to enter the depot’s back office.

There, police said he made off with several sets of keys and three iPhone XRs.

Each of the phones were valued at around $1,000.

Police have no description of the perp, but might get some leads from camera footage of the scene.

The investigation continues.

Unsafe mailboxes

Mailboxes seem to be a less and less secure way to send money these days — at least in this corner of the Bronx.

One woman became the latest victim of a mailbox heist when she went to mail her Optimum bill at the northwest corner of West 254th Street and Riverdale Avenue during the early morning hours of Jan. 3.

A week or so later, the woman’s bank contacted her warning there was fraudulent activity on her account. It seems, police said, someone had tried to help themselves to $10,000 of her money.

The woman canceled her account and luckily recovered all the money. Still, detectives from the 50th Precinct continue to investigate.

Protect electronic pocketbook of yours

Financial fraud seems to be an increasingly common trend in this area — usually with thieves stealing money from someone’s accounts electronically.

Unfortunately, a man living on the 5700 block of Mosholu Avenue became the latest victim on Jan. 18. He told police he was going through his bank accounts when he came across a check he didn’t recognize — $4,800 that was deposited electronically into someone else’s account.

Investigators won’t say if he got that money back, but they are on the case.
