Tobi Kahn, an internationally celebrated artist, painter and sculptor whose work is shown in more than 70 solo exhibitions and over 60 museums, visited Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy on Jan. 29 for the opening of his exhibit “LOOKING. SEEING. BEING.” After displaying his work and Jewish ritual objects, he led a family workshop that will run through Feb. 26. And families can design and create their own tzedek box, a new ritual supporting the Jewish community and their allies. The tradition is to add a note to the box and, once a year, open it. The artist said each year, on the second day of Passover, a holiday commemorating the Jewish national liberation from the slavery of Egypt, is the day to open the box. ‘I have been inspired by the emerging Jewish ritual of a tzedek box, to which we add notes that capture our thoughts each time we do a righteous deed,’ Kahn said.
