POLICE BEAT

A rather successful shoplifting outing

Posted

TJ Maxx is known for its incredible bargains, but even the retail giant won’t offer a five-finger discount. Yet on Feb. 25, someone tried to test their luck.

Police were called out to the West 230th Street store at around 11 a.m., claiming a woman stole two bras and three pairs of underwear. When a store employee reportedly attempted to intervene, the shoplifter tried to convince them she had a knife, warning “I will stab you.”

Although the woman made a clean getaway, police were able to retrieve security camera footage that could lead them in the direction of an arrest. Luckily, no one was injured.

Steal of a deal

Car dealerships can be known for their crazy discount prices, but even they won’t give away a car for free.

Yet on Feb. 9, police got a call from Charlie Auto Sales across the Broadway Bridge near West 215th Street that someone nabbed the dealership’s 2007 Chevy Impala parked near the Target store in Marble Hill.

Police didn’t provide a value for the car, but say they continue to investigate.

‘Washing’ checks are on the rise

Getting a call from your bank is never fun, especially when it’s to inform you that someone has tried to rob you of thousands of dollars.

An employee from the Methodist Home for Nursing and Rehabilitation at 4499 Manhattan College Parkway told police on the afternoon of Feb. 8 she received a call from the bank asking if she had submitted a pair of checks totaling $25,880.

Investigators say someone had “washed” a check from the nursing home and then tried to deposit it.

The police are treating this case as a grand larceny, as the nursing home did not authorize these payments. They continue to investigate.
