And the beat goes on

To the editor:

Unfortunately, the recent Riverdale Press article about the noise from a Manhattan University student house at 440 W. 238th Street has had no effect.

On March 8, a frat party woke me up with loud yelling and beer pong at 7:30 a.m. I submitted a complaint to 311 which remains open. At 10:30, their loud, bass-heavy techno music began and the yelling intensified. This comes after a loud night where I had to submit a noise complaint about Fenwick’s Bar at 3:37 a.m., which was closed at 4:59 a.m. when, “the Police Department responded to the complaint and took action to fix the condition.”

I am losing sleep and valuable time. I have also lost patience. MU students do not own this neighborhood and they cannot be allowed to disrespect it at will. The only alternative is to suffer in silence, which many neighbors are doing at this very moment. But I refuse to accept this unacceptable situation which affects the community's peace, mental health and property values.

Decisive action must be taken to shut this intolerable noise down. The Feb. 14 article, “Are Manhattan U students to blame for the noise?” mentioned fines for violating the student code of conduct. I urge you to please fine the students at the address above. If you have done so already, which is doubtful judging by their carefree noise, I urge you to do it again. But with the higher fines mentioned for repeat offenses.

There must be consequences for disturbing the peace and they are long overdue.
