A major water main break at a construction site near Van Cortlandt Park South and Broadway this morning wreaked havoc in Kingsbridge.
The water main valve has been shut off and water pressure is gradually being restored to nearby buildings and in parts of Kingsbridge and Riverdale, according to Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and Councilman Eric Dinowitz.
The two officials have been in touch with the Office of Emergency Management, Department of Environmental Protection, the FDNY and the Department of Buildings.
All lanes of the Major Deegan Expressway were closed as of 2:14 p.m., according to Notify NYC, an city emergency alert service.
A firefighter on the scene told The Press construction workers in the area hit the water main, causing the incident. Surrounding streets have since been closed off, and water and gas lines shut down.
Officials are also warning a 300-foot crane in the middle of the site is at risk of toppling, and urging pedestrians to stay clear of the area.
According to FDNY officials, the first call came in at 10:34 a.m., adding 5925 and 5969 Broadway are affected by the break.
Chris Petitt, a resident in the area, said his building had low water pressure as a result of the break.
The city department of envionmental protection was on the scene. FDNY officials said the departments of transportation and buildings were notified of the break.
Derek Bennet, a salesman at Riverdale Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram on West 240th Street and Broadway, told The Press he called 911 around 11 a.m. after water started flooding into the showroom from the street.
General Manager Brian Perez and two other managers at the scene, Jacob Carrasquillo and Sergio Nunez Fernandez, said they were worried cars and paperwork stored in the basement might have been damaged.
