Cantor set to say goodbye to temple

Posted

Riverdale Temple is about to say goodbye to one of its spiritual leaders after a decade of service.

Cantor Inbal Sharett-Singer is set to become the new senior cantor at Temple Israel in Minneapolis. Rabbi Tom Gardner and synagogue president Ronna Weber broke the news to the Riverdale Temple congregation just this past week.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for her to shine as the senior cantor of a large, vibrant synagogue,” the two said in an email.

“Sadness, too, as we bid farewell to someone who has been an important part of our lives and our synagogue for the past 10 years.”

Sharett-Singer interned at Riverdale Temple for three years before becoming a full cantor. She sung at weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and funerals. She even visited members at home and in the hospital.

Riverdale Temple is now searching for a new cantor — but the congregation has a little bit of time to make the right decision. Sharett-Singer will stay on at the Independence Avenue synagogue until summer.

Be careful of ice

It’s been cold outside, which means it’s not hard to walk too far without encountering some ice.

But if you do, the city’s parks department wants you to be prepared.

That means never walking on water bodies that appear to be frozen — since they might not be as solid as one might think.

Children should never be left unattended near iced-over water bodies.

If you do venture out onto ice and you start to hear cracking — lie down immediately. This should help distribute your weight, and stop the ice from breaking up.

And finally, if someone does fall through the ice, call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to rescue someone yourself. When you call 911, be ready to give your exact location and an account of what happened.

The parks department says it is posting warning signs about potential thin ice around lakes, ponds and other waterways. That’s accounting for not only nearly 100 bodies of water within the city park system, but another 150 miles of shoreline.
