POLICE BEAT

Careful of that phantom gun

Posted

There are likely times when one person can safely call someone else’s bluff. But when that bluff involves what may be a gun in their pocket, it’s probably best to do what they say.

One woman decided to play it safe when she faced this exact situation on the afternoon of Jan. 8. She told police she was getting into her car on the 3000 block of Bailey Avenue when a man walked up to her with what appeared to be a gun in his pocket.

“If you don’t get out, I’m going to kill you,” he reportedly told the woman before speeding off in her car.

Police recovered the vehicle a short time later while searching the area, and also arrested the suspected thief a few days later. They slapped him with robbery and unauthorized use of a vehicle charges.

Watch your car keys

If you’re staying in a motel room with your car parked outside, it’s probably best to make sure the door to your room is locked.

One victim could’ve used this advice when his car was stolen around 5:30 p.m., on Jan. 1. The man told police he was taking a shower in his room at the Van Cortlandt Motel — 6393 Broadway — when a woman stepped into his room and took his keys. She then made off with his 2017 blue Lexus.

Cops describe the woman as Black, 30 years old, and standing 5-foot-7.

Sandwich with a side of cash

Usually when people go to the deli for a sandwich, that’s all they want. But sometimes people are hungry for more than just a cheesy concoction fresh off the griddle, and their appetite will only be satisfied by one thing: cash.

That was the case in the early morning hours of Jan. 9 when a man robbed City Line Deli & Grocery at 6659 Broadway. The man walked into the deli asking for a sandwich, according to a report, and then pulled out a black gun, yelling, “Do you want to die? Give me all the money.”

He emptied both the cash and lottery registers, making off with about $4,000.

Cops describe him as Black Hispanic, standing 5-foot-7.
