DOE releases virtual virus-tracking tool

Personal protective equipment, social distancing and hand-washing are musts in schools during the age of the coronavirus pandemic. But awareness also is important, especially when it comes to coronavirus testing in these schools.

The city’s education department is sharing an interactive map on its website plotting all public schools reporting at least one positive COVID-19 case. The map also shares how many classes are affected and the campus’ operational status.

An affected school is marked and colored on the map according to its operational status. A gray plot point means someone at the school tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, but didn’t expose other members of the school community. A blue plot point means one or more classrooms within the building reported a positive test, have shut down, and will be entirely remote for 14 days. Finally, a red marking means the entire building has gone remote for 14 days.

The map is updated with the most recent testing information Sunday through Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Horace Mann closes after positive tests

Horace Mann School shut down its campus for middle and upper divisions Tuesday after tracking “multiple” confirmed positive tests for SARS-CoV-2.

That has shifted Horace Mann to fully remote classes through at least Oct. 19, one upper division student confirmed to The Riverdale Press.

“It is clear these additional cases of positive COVID-19 do have overlap with students and employees at a level that makes me uncomfortable moving forward with in-person instruction for our middle and upper divisions,” school head Thomas Kelly told parents in an email.
