Don't forget about everyone else

(re: “Camilo ready to take that next step,” March 24)

The Riverdale Press has always been known for its fair, honest and upfront reporting. I am sorry to say that this was not the case in your story headlining Miguelina Camilo and her campaign for the state senate seat currently held by Alessandra Biaggi.

In this case, it seems The Press under its new leadership, is acting as a spokesperson for the Democratic machine here in the Bronx.

There are three other candidates planning to run in the primary. They are Christian Amato, Lisa Hofflich and James Gisondi. Your story literally gave them very little space and provided us with little information about them.

Four years ago, this community ejected the Democratic Party machine that was in full support of our then-state Sen. Jeffrey Klein. We elected Alesssandra Biaggi to bring about change in Albany, and most of what she has accomplished has been right on target.

Miguelina Camilo would be a return to control by the Bronx party machine. All the positions and experiences you credit her with are controlled by the Bronx Democratic Party. Do we really want to return to that?

While I personally support Christian Amato and his positions on community service, affordable housing, a totally redesigned homeless shelter with a quality agency running it — among other things — I believe readers of The Press need to make their own decisions, and that this paper should help them achieve that.

Over the next three issues, The Press should offer an in-depth interview with the three other candidates running for state senate. There should be a photo as well as a story introducing us to their positions, goals and accomplishments.

This is what an unbiased community newspaper should provide to its readers.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The story on Miguelina Camilo is part of a series of candidate profiles The Riverdale Press has traditionally published, typically soon after they officially file for office. Christian Amato has been featured in a number of stories already, but will be offered a chance to be profiled, as will James Gisondi. Lisa Hofflich’s profile runs in this week’s edition.
