Engel wants to ban e-cigs in schools

U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel has joined two of his congressional colleagues to introduce the Smoke-Free Schools Act of 2019.

The bill, if passed into law, would ban e-cigarette use in education and child care facilities nationwide.

“We are in the midst of an adolescent tobacco epidemic,” Engel said, in a release. “Too many children are being exposed to e-cigarettes in schools, threatening the progress we have made in reducing tobacco use. The bill we have introduced provides our teachers and school administrators with federal support to tackle this public health crisis and prevent another generation from becoming addicted to nicotine.”

Engel’s bill is co-authored by Chris Stewart, a Utah Republican, and Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat.

Its Senate companion bill was introduced by New Mexico Democrat Tom Udall and Utah Republican Mitt Romney.
