Experiencing a shift in politics

Posted

To the editor:

A long time ago, when I was young, the Deep South voted solid Democratic, but northern New England was rock-ribbed Republican.

Maine. Vermont, and New Hampshire were among the most Republican states in the union. There was a lot of antisemitism there, making it hard for Jews to find sleeping places while traveling.

Sentiment in the three cited states began to slip over to the Democrats in the mid-1950s. They are now among the most solidly Democratic in national elections.

Another state, which now is generally Democratic — Massachusetts — was a “swing state” in the old days, often electing Republican senators and governors.

The Deep South became solidly Republican a generation ago, but seems to be moving toward the Democrats in recent years. The only constant is change.
