Former FRA leader interim NYCT head

Former federal railroad administrator Sarah Feinberg is the new interim president of New York City Transit — at least for now.

Feinberg, at least temporarily, succeeds Andy Byford, who stepped down from the key Metropolitan Transportation Authority position earlier this month.

She will oversee the 48,000-member MTA work force, as well as the operations for the city’s subways, buses, paratransit services, and the Staten Island Railway.

Serving under President Barack Obama, Feinberg was the second woman in the history to lead the Federal Railroad Administration, which acts as the sole safety regulator of the U.S. rail system. She also served as the chief of staff to the U.S. Department of Transportation, and special assistant to the president and senior advisor to White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel during the Obama administration.

She most recently served as chair of the MTA’s transit committee.

“As a transportation professional, there’s no greater impact on public service than working with the people responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of 8 million New Yorkers every day,” Feinberg said, in a release.

“I could not be happier and more proud to join this incredible team, and look forward to jumping into the work right away.”

Feinberg is set to take over her interim role on March 9, while the MTA looks for a more permanent leader.
