Half Moon on Hudson

Posted

To the editor:

In the middle of one recent clear night, I awoke to a bright light. It was the moon, a half moon.

Half Moon was the name of the boat of explorer Henry Hudson. And here it was, the half moon on the Hudson River.

To the left, towering over Spuyten Duyvil, was the statue of Hudson, who explored the New York City region in the early 1600s. In addition, he made two trips looking for the Northeast Passage, believed to lead to China.

On the ill-fated second trip, he met his death when his crew mutinied as he insisted on forging into the Arctic Circle to find the passage.

Now, here in Riverdale, he looks out toward the eponymous band of water, relentlessly searching the horizon.
