Homeless man killed in Kingsbridge street stabbing

UPDATE: Alleged perp charged with manslaughter

Posted

A homeless man was killed and another man is in custody after a street brawl turned deadly in Kingsbridge early Friday morning.

Police say they found Richard Roberts, 52, with multiple stab wounds at West 236th Street and Broadway just after midnight following a 911 call reporting an assault in progress.

Roberts was rushed to New York Presbyterian-Allen Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Other details remain sketchy, but investigators with the New York Police Department say they arrested at the scene a 58-year-old man they are describing as a "person of interest."  That man — Hardy Renell, also homeless — was charged early Friday evening with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

This is the fourth homicide in the 50th Precinct this year, already doubling the total number of murders reported in 2022.  Major crimes overall are up nearly 5 percent over last year through June 25, according to statistics released by the NYPD.
