Lehman opens new doors for journalism

Lehman College has partnered with The Wall Street Journal to create a data-based journalism program, intended to give communications students there the tools to eventually enter the newsroom work force.

The goal would be to change what has been traditionally homogenous newsrooms into ones that are more diverse.

A 2018 newspaper diversity study by the American Society of Newspaper Editors showed that less than 10 percent of all newsroom staffers or executives are Asian, Hispanic or black. Lehman — where 90 percent of its undergraduates are of color — hopes to provide the modern tools necessary for data-based and information-intensive internet journalism, according to Journal editor-in-chief Matt Murray.

As part of the program, five Lehman fellows will spend 10 weeks in the Wall Street Journal’s newsroom getting a hands-on experience in digital research and development using artificial intelligence.

Free English language classes now open

The Sisters of Charity are now offering free English as a Second Language and citizenship classes at the College of Mount Saint Vincent campus.

The classes are primarily geared toward immigrants of all nationalities living in southwest Yonkers or the northwest Bronx.

Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays beginning March 18 at the 6301 Riverdale Ave., campus.
