Zohran Mamdani’s journey into politics has been a fast rise to the top.
He’ll add a new title to his political trajectory after Tuesday night.
As first reported by Decision Desk HQ, Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election. At 34 years old, he is set to become the youngest person to be elected mayor in over 100 years.
Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, founder of the crime patrol group the Guardian Angels.
Mamdani, a Bronx High School of Science alumni, was originally born in Uganda and moved to the city at 7 years old. He was elected as a state assemblymember in 2020 to represent parts of Queens, including Astoria.
His campaign for mayor was based on making the city more affordable. Proposals included a rent freeze for rent-stabilized apartments, free buses and universal childcare, paid for by raising taxes on corporations and wealthy New Yorkers.
Early on in the race, Mamdani secured the endorsement of state Sen. Gustavo Rivera. Other local elected officials, such as Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and Council Member Eric Dinowitz, withheld their support for any candidate.
Mamdani's political career has been a meteoric rise. Now, he's set to move into his new place of residence in the coming months:
Gracie Mansion.
