Things continue to look promising for the University of Mount St. Vincent’s soccer programs, as both the men’s and women’s teams have positioned themselves as contenders in Skyline Conference play.
For the men, last week brought both a test of resilience and an opportunity to showcase their depth. On Sept. 24, the Dolphins faced the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a game that lived up to its billing as a battle of the Skyline’s top two squads. Over 90 minutes, both defenses stood tall. Despite chances for each side, neither team could find the finishing touch, and the contest ended in a 0-0 draw.
While it was the first match that didn’t result in a win on the season for Mount St. Vincent, the result highlighted the Dolphins’ ability to stay organized in the back and maintain their unbeaten record.
Just three days later, the men bounced back in style against Sarah Lawrence College. From the opening whistle, the Dolphins dictated the tempo, and their persistence paid off early. Junior midfielder Sebastian Ciurlizza put them ahead with a penalty kick in the 16th minute. Only five minutes later, Jose Gonzalez doubled the lead, registering his first goal of the season.
With Sarah Lawrence pressing late, reigning Skyline Conference rookie of the year Javier Turjillo iced the match, scoring his fourth of the campaign in the 89th minute to cap a 3-1 victory.
The win improved the Dolphins’ overall record to 6-0-1. It also continued the program’s best unbeaten start since 2013, when Mount St. Vincent opened the year with nine straight victories before beginning conference play. That team ultimately finished with 12 wins, and the 2025 edition already finds itself halfway to that mark with eight regular season contests remaining.
Currently tied with Manhattanville University at the top of the Skyline standings, the Dolphins will look to extend their run when they host Farmingdale State College on Oct. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for noon, and the game promises to have major implications in the race for first place.
The women’s team has been equally impressive. After playing to a 2-2 draw against Merchant Marine, the Dolphins responded with a dominant 3-0 shutout of Sarah Lawrence on Sept. 27. Dana DeDominicis and Kerrigyn Lynam provided the goals in the draw, while Lynam struck again in the 38th minute against Sarah Lawrence.
She was joined on the scoresheet in the second half by Aiyanna Robles Sedano and Michelle Zuniga, ensuring Mount St. Vincent left no doubt.
With the win, the Dolphins improved to 4-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference action. Like the men, they will next face Farmingdale State on Oct. 4, in a matchup that could help define the direction of their season.
