Those who commuted on or near the Henry Hudson Parkway in Spuyten Duyvil on the morning of Friday, Jan. 17 witnessed a shocking sight — an MTA bus hanging off a parkway overpass.
Multiple sources on the scene told The Press the bus operator attempted to maneuver around a double-parked vehicle on the parkway’s service road near Kappock Street when the 57-year-old driver lost control of the bus and caused it to plow into the parkway’s overpass barrier.
The crash looked like something out of a movie as the front of the bus teetered over the barrier edge and large boulders of rubble laid along the highway below.
There were no passengers aboard the BxM1 bus at the time of the incident and the driver was removed from the bus without incident, police confirmed.
NYPD and EMS personnel flooded the scene with at least a dozen emergency vehicles nearby streets were closed off to all vehicular traffic.
“Thank goodness nobody was hurt,” a bystander at the site said. “That’s the most important thing.”
Double parking is a common infraction in parts of the west Bronx and Friday’s crash is an example of how it not only presents an inconvenience for other drivers, but a safety hazard as well.
The Press reached out to Councilmember Eric Dinowitz to inquire how his office proposes to eliminate double parking in response to this incident and is currently awaiting a response.
