No trash pickup or recycling on July 4

Summer is here, and Fourth of July is around the corner. And speaking of the holiday, if you’re supposed to put trash and recycling out that Saturday, you’ll have to make other plans.

The city’s sanitation department says there will be no trash or recycling collection on July 4. For those who normally have trash picked up on Saturday, they would simply move to the next day, July 5.

For those who usually have recycling done on Saturday, that will have to move to the curbside Friday, July 10 at 4 p.m.

On top of that, the city is closing its sanitation department administrative offices on Friday, July 3.

Cohen redirects funds to Lehman pantry

Councilman Andrew Cohen has delivered $10,000 in grant money to a food pantry that should help keep hungry Lehman College students fed through the summer — even as the campus remains off-limits.

“The councilman’s grant was considerably kind and generous,” said Suzette Ramsundar, associate director of campus life at Lehman, about the discretionary funds Cohen earmarked for them, in a release.

Instead of receiving bags of food, students will be mailed $50 gift cards from Morton Williams.

The food bank at Lehman was started in 2017, but has experienced a 300 percent increase in request for services from students since the coronavirus pandemic hit, the school said.

“Hunger should never be a barrier to an equitable education,” Cohen said, in a release. “I’m proud to provide this funding to advance Lehman food pantry’s work addressing campus food insecurity, deeply rooted in the school philosophy of fostering economic and social mobility through education.”

Riverdale loves bulldogs

Astoria, Chelsea, Murray Hill and even Park Slope might love their French bulldogs. But in Riverdale? All we need is just a simple bulldog.

The American Kennel Club shared its most popular breeds in the city for the past year, and it was the French bulldog topping the list, followed by the labrador retriever, a golden retriever, poodle and German shepherd dog.

Bulldogs might not be popular in New York City, but they are the fifth most popular dog in the nation.
