To the editor:
I am a senior citizen who is extremely worried about the future of democracy in our country. I was born here. I have lived through a lot of history, including the assassination of President Kennedy, the Vietnam War and 9/11.
In high school we read the Constitution of the United States; we disused its contents and amendments. We learned everything in the constitution had a purpose, to protect our rights. We learned that, before this country was formed, no one had these rights.
Now Project 2025 wants to send us backward. It is a 900-page autocratic handbook that aims to undercut our constitution and give unlimited power to the executive branch of government. It is a very dangerous and extreme agenda, brought about by shortsighted individuals, who do not realize the powers they wish to give away could very easily be turn against them if they fall out of grace.
Project 2025 targets our voting rights and our personal freedom. It lays out a plan to reduce Social Security and Medicare, raise taxes on the middle class, create tariffs, lowers taxes for the wealthy, adds a national sales tax and weaponizes the Justice Department.
Congress needs to reject Project 2025 and pass legislation to protect our rights and freedom. It needs to limit the power of corporations to influence our elections and government policy. The members of congress of both parties must reject Project 2025.
