Protect our reproductive rights

Posted

To the editor:

NYCD16-Indivisible stands for the reproductive freedom of all people. We believe everyone should have the right to control what happens to their bodies, including making the decision whether or not to have a child, as well as the right to parent children in a safe and healthy environment.

We are angry and appalled by the draft U.S. Supreme Court ruling showing how far unelected members of the court are determined to stray from both precedent and protecting the reproductive rights of all. Eighty percent of Americans believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases. Yet, certain members of the Supreme Court are beholden to the well-funded anti-abortion minority in this country, and are hell-bent on controlling reproductive self-determination.

This attack on abortion access will have the most profound impact in communities of color, poor communities and other structurally marginalized communities.

Where reproductive rights go, other rights follow, determining whether we as a country support equal rights for all: civil rights, gay marriage, voting rights, immigrant rights.

This decision, if it is indeed the court’s ultimate ruling, must not stand.

We call on our local officials in the Bronx and Westchester County to stand up for reproductive freedom!

We call on our New York state representatives to uphold and strengthen our state as a beacon for reproductive rights, and shore up our defenses against this Republican onslaught against personal freedom.

We call on our members of Congress to codify Roe v Wade into law by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act and expanding the Supreme Court now to protect reproductive rights.

We are committed to electing representatives who protect reproductive justice and equal rights for all. We call on all voters to demand that their elected officials stand up for reproductive rights, because reproductive rights are human rights.
