Richie Stein, Hilary Baum honored at RNH benefit

If it wasn’t for the Riverdale Neighborhood House, there likely would have never been a Riverdale Press. By the same token, the community organization continues to flourish today because of the work of volunteers like former Riverdale Press co-owner Richard Stein and wife Hilary Baum.

The two were honored during the 147th anniversary benefit for Riverdale Neighborhood House last month in Yonkers, an organization that has been tied to the Stein family for decades.

In fact, Richard Stein’s first paying gig was as a counselor-in-training at Riverdale Neighborhood House’s day camp at 14, which he later wrote about in the paper.

It was that kind of work that made at least a small contribution to his Horace Mann tuition, leading him to a small cafe at the end of the 1 train line where he met a Fieldston student named Hilary.

The two would be inseparable, even working on the geodesic dome teen center project he designed for Seton Park.

Hilary Baum is the daughter of “restaurant impresario” Joe Baum, and it’s that legacy she brought to the neighborhood house. She was a driving force in the creation of the Hawthorne Valley Farm community-supported agriculture project at the neighborhood house, according to a published biography.

Richard Stein remains a publisher emeritus of The Press with his brother Bernard, and continues to lend his design expertise to the paper.
