RTNS eyes new playground

Posted

Few childhood memories are more prominent than those created on the playground. And Riverdale Temple Nursery School hopes to give theirs a facelift in the coming months.

The nursery school plans to renovate its playground by removing the sand in favor of rubber flooring and installing new play structures for the children.

“Our nursery school is a warm and loving place, where our children grown and learn through a play-based curriculum, with play and happiness at the center of everything we do,” the fundraising committee wrote in an email. “With our children’s growth and happiness as our focus, it has become a necessity that we update our playground so that it can benefit the current families and many more families for years to come.”

The nursery school’s initial fundraising efforts are under way, and it plans to share updates of the remodeling in the coming months.

New chancellor kicks off busy first week

She may have been a Bronx superintendent just a few weeks ago, but Meisha Porter decided to spend her first day as New York City’s schools chancellor elsewhere.

Porter, who took over the position from Richard Carranza after his resignation, traveled to P.S. 15 Patrick F. Daly in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood on her first day, but that wasn’t her only stop. In fact, she visited schools in all five boroughs over the course of her first week, including P.S. 45 John Tyler on Staten Island and Bell Academy in Queens.

Now that high schools are back to at least some sort of in-person learning, Porter plans to turn her attention to the inequities facing the nation’s largest public school system while serving in her new role.

“I’m ready to hit the ground running and lead New York City schools to full recovery,” she said after her appointment. “Primarily, as chancellor, my job will be to remove the barriers, to direct resources where they’re needed most, and communicate clearly around our shared goals and commitments at every school in every neighborhood in every single borough.”

She’s the first Black woman to hold the position boasting decades of experience within the education department — both as a teacher and as an administrator.
